Tekken 3 (Namco)

This is not just anv old 3D
brawler, this is the third
Tekken, one of the few fran-
chises that supposedly meets
or beats Sega’s benchmark,
Virtua Fighter(s). Looks awe-
some, as you'd expect —
Motion-captured martal artists
and all chat —- and like most
superior 3D fighters, strategic
elements and character finesse
play a huge part in the overall
experience. A deep and
thoughtful brain-bashing
brawl.

Pretty cool, though | don't
really like the way the con-
troller is laid out: Lett arm,
right arm, left leg, night leg
buttons; move or block or
jump or dash or deck with the
D-pad; combo any of these
and something nasty some-
umes happens. Control seems
disjointed and hodgepodge
(though true fans of the series
probably have a better handle
on it).

Jumping into the fray and
blindly mashing buttons works
for a while, but before long
opponents will tire of your
foolishly frenzied style and
unleash some lengthy, bizarre
and brutal multi-hir combo
that'll pretty much wipe you
out. Then you have to sit
down and really learn that
gooty controller layout if you
want to get anywhere. Oh
well. In addition to arena
fighting, however, there are a

few other game modes, nwo of

which are a real treat: There’s
“Tekken Force” mode, which
is a retro side-scrolling fight-
ec/adventure, and there’s che
bizarre “Tekken Ball” mode
where characters play a sort of
volley ball game to the death-
sounds wild bur [ haven’t
unlocked it yet. Fans of the
franchise will dig Tekken 3. It's
good, but T wasn’t that
impressed. Good rental. Good
purchase.
