Dance partners reunite

IT’S a small world, the world of
dance. ;

Six years ago Jacqueline Akhmedova and
Alexi Lapshin danced together at the Vienna
State Opera Ballet. This Sunday, June 13,
they will dance together again, this time at
Centennial Theatre. Their pas de deux from Le
Corsaire is the finale of a program by students
of Anna Wyman School of Dance Arts, where
Akhmedova runs the profes ional training
program with huseind Luke Newton-Mason,
aso from the Vienna State Opera Ballet.

It was at a performance: by Montreal's Les
Grands Ballets Canadiens at Queen Elizabeth
Theatre this past winter that the cancers spot-
ted their former colleague’s name in the pro-
gram and caught up with him backstage.

“He thought I was still in Vienna. I knew
he was somewhere in Ametica,” say
Akhmedova, who encouraged Lapshin to
book a return visit our West.

The dance partners will have just two days

shearsals before their special guest appear-

rehearsing all year for their moment in the
spotlight. A matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday will
showease tiny talent, while dancers ages 10
and up will be featured in the evening pro-
ckets (S9 to $13)
