Pipers win UBC tourney A perfectly baianced Argyle Pipers girls volleyball team led a balanced attack on rival teams to win the recent UBC Invitational. In the process, the Pipers — five seniors and five Grade 11s — achieved a goal set when the season began back in September. “We had a few tourna- ments before this one, so we targeted the UBC to be a peaking opportunity for us,” said first-year coach Gwen Parker. “So that made the win even nicer for us.” In the tournament final, the Pipers pounded Winnipeg’s Kildonan East 15-5, 15-12. “They got better and bet- ter as the tournament went on,” Parker said. “And they were still willing to play hard at 8:30 at night on Saturday after six matches already that day.” In the semi-final, Argyle beat Johnson Heights two games to one.
