42 - Friday, May 16, 1997 — North Shore News City plans monument to new millennium By Jolanda Waskito Contributing Writer NORTH Vancouver City is planning to build an artistic monument to mark the new millennium. City staff has proposed a design to coincide with the completion of a proposed civic plaza — to be constructed on West First Street in Lower Lonsdale — in the year 2000. The Millennium Plaza design consists of a spiral, “manifested in a distinctive paved strip uncoiling from a central water feature, winding round the plaza,” according to staffs recom- mended concept. Paving slabs will be etched with images commemorating major world and local events of the last thousand years, as well as a sculptur- al piece marking the year 2000. Council told staff at the meeting Monday that it loved the design. “T like how the City of North Vancouver’s going to celebrate the year 2000," Coun. Barbara Perrault said. “The plaza will provide excellent space for the entire community. {t’s unique and the whole concept is an exciting one.” Coun. Bob Fearnley said he too liked the debate concept and would be happy to support it. Coun. Darrell Mussatto said it was “anoth- er example of our fine staff.” Coun, Stella Jo Dean, one of nwo members of council opposed to the motion to accept the design cuncept, said a contest should have been held co generate more ideas other than the one staff proposed. “If we would’ve had a contest we could've had all sorts of designs,” Dean said. “Maybe we could have had 50 entries.” She also suggested that council should lobby the government to build a new “milien- nium bridge” from the North Shore ro Stanley Park. Coun. John Braithwaite, who also voted against the motion, said that at first h- was “raken by the creative idea,” but ageeed with Dean that there should have been a design contest. “I don’t think we should be charmed by the planner,” Braithwaite said. “1 don’t see why this idea can’t be set out there to other ideas. I don’t see why there can’t be a competition.” The mayor said the motion allows for the incorporation of more ideas for the design of the jlaza ¢ ideas are quite good and would be much admired by many people if it goes through,” Jack Loucks said. Dean’s motion to hold a design contest was defeated 5-2. f International Language School of Canada ; Homestay Families Required _.
