Actuaily, the place is in
pretty good shiape for basic liv-
ing. We know where our pyja-
mas and meals are by now,
more or less. We’re still lack-
ing some refinements like the
answering machine {a few
wires crossed?), my writing
room is a’mess and the pic-
tures aren’t hung.

When hanging time does

- It’s the best part of moving,
actually, to put ‘familiar things

' “into new relationships so that

they engage the eye again. One

that the Japanese people string
together and use in various
ways, for both artistic and
practical purposes.

They may be simply wall
hangings, in lieu of prints or
photographs, they may hang in
open doorways, as a sort of
cordial demarcation of space,
but not to keep anything out.

Mine is only three sections,
each about the size of a dinner
napkin, deep blue cotton but
each square decorated in white
in very Japanese design, and
these designs are what [ cher-.
ish, they being so particular to
that country.

The middle cloth bears
three shapes like fat commas,
tucked in head to tail, some-
thing like yin and yang, and
each end cloth carries a styl-

“ which is not so much a country

in my mind as a series of peo-
ple in a surrounding of exotic

art-and food and legend.

To my great advantage, ;
from my first visit to the firm, ~
I was accepted as the responsi-
bility of a man born there, edu-
cated, open-minded and at
ease anywhere in the world.

. My role was as my hus-
‘ band’s emissary only, to try to
estabiish a connection for the
supply of used truck tires, and
my chief responsibility was to
be accurate in all the informa-

tion | carried back to him. I
dealt only with men in offices
and in yards, surrounded by
piles of huge tractor tires and
truck tires and smaller sizes of
pick-ups.

I was always handed a
freshly laundered pair of white
cotton gloves for inspection
purposes.

But this man who was my
point of reference found time
to take me to Japanese theatre,
to the stone gardens and the
tranquil monks’ domains, to
the lovely shrines; made sure I
had frequent views of Fuji, for
good luck; and that I was pre-

sented with as wide a range of ©

entirely new-to-me food as I
was willing to sample. I sam-
pled it all.

He also took the trouble to

write long letters to me during

the months I was at home,
about the philosophers of his

country and about the signifi-

cance of the willow, the pine’
and the cherry tree.

Thus I’ve clung to those
sights and experiences, though
it’s more than 10 years since
my last visit. And that’s why ..
