Properties association joining fisheries personnel in clean-up THE BRITISH Properties Area and Homeowners Association (BPAHA) has teamed up with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to clean up local creeks. By A.P. McCredie News Reporter Although no creeks or streams cunning through the British Pro- perties have been seriously dam- aged in the pasi, the BPAHA’s campaign to protect the waterways will focus on eliminating sources of pollution and improving access for migrating fish. Fisheries technical staff have checked the two main branches of Brothers Creek that run east of Sentinel secondary school and through the Hollyburn Country Club and found the physical con- dition and water quality of the streams to be fairly goud. “A few adult coho are return- ing to spawn in the lower reaches of Brothers Creek, and there is a small population of resident trout - in some of ihe pools,” said fish- eries community advisor Sam Gidora. The main waterway through the eastern portion of the British Propertics, Hadden Creek, will be tested and reviewed in the new ear. | The BPAHA is also teaming up with students from local schools on a project to identify and mark storm drains with painted yellow fish. The marking program is aimed at raising awareness that small discharges — oils and other automotive products, detergents, Painting materials, pesticides — trom thousands of households can poison many miles of neighbor- hood streams. It also helps illustrate that vir- tually all storm sewers on the North Shore run into_area creeks and rivers. in the past, a number of North Shore creeks — including Wagg Creek, MacKay Creek, and Hastings Creek -—~ have been seriously damaged by materials dumped in storm sewers. According to the Ministry of Environment, 99% of the North Shore drains and sewers empty in- to area creeks and most of those creeks drain into four major fish supporting waterways — Lynn Creek, MacKay Creek, and the Seymour and Capilano rivers. The North Shore was one of the first areas in the province to initi- ate drain marking. But according to Kevin Bell, program director at the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre, only 30% of the sewers have been marked since the program’s in- troduction in 1988. “The only organizations that sill show interest in the marking program are elementary schools and Girl Guide groups,”* said Bell. “Apart from them, we have had very little interest (from) the community. Bell said if you look at a map detailing the marked drains, the vast majority are close to elemen- tary schools. Bell is scheduled to meet on Dec. 10 with fisheries officials and Tepresentatives from the North Vancouver District parks advisory committee to discuss a proposed ‘‘adopt-a-creek”’ program. if the program is approved, Exhibit offers underwater view Who lives under the Lions Gate Bridge?
