Music Now spoke with festival coordinator Gary Cristall. Music Now: Last year the weather did not cooperate. How did you do? So now we have a new deficit. | figure the Ontario symphony just filed for bankruptcy, the art gallery of On- tario is closed, we're not in as bad shape as they are. But last year was a disastrous year for us.’ Music Now: Anything speciat planned to mark the 15th an- nual? Cristall: “l think we'll have a fes- tival. The question was begged re- ally. What are we going to do about the 15th annual? My feeling was the best thing to do was ig- nore it in a way. “It don’t think we're old enough to start celebrating an- niversaries. What we did is we decided to do a much more diverse festival than we've ever done — a bit less thematic than what it has-been in the last three or four years. In a sense it’s an overview of what’s happening in folk music throughout the world.” Music Now: Do you work with a certain percentage of new: artists every year? Cristall: ‘I always want to have somewhere over a haif to two thirds who haven't been at the fes- tival. This year there are probably more people who have never been at this festival — and frankly have never played Vancouver be- . fore — than at any previous festi- val. | decided to do a lot of new people.” Music Now: Are there any last-minute changes to the lineup? Cristall: “Well Olodum (Brazil) fell through, they took a gig in England — we're down about 25 drummers.
