MEETING THE CHALLENGE Western Pulp management and employees are committed to cperating its Howe Sound facility in an environmentally responsible manner. Our Woodfibre mill in Squamish is nearing completion of a $70 million environment program which began in 1989. BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT Molecular chlorine usage has been reduced by 61% since 1987. | The Provincial Government's regulation of 2.5 kg (AOX)/tonne of pulp in the discharge of chlorinated organic compounds (AOX) by the end of 1992 was achieved in 1991. We will meet the next target of 1.5 kg (AOX)/tonne of pulp by the end of 1995. Our extended oxygen activated sludge biological effluent treatment system (secondary treatment) will come on line this Fall. ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRESS In 1991 the mill converted its auxiliary fuel from oil to clean burning natural gas, displacing over 200,000 barrels of oil, which resulted in lower sulphur dioxide emissions and minimized oil barge movements in Howe Sound. Western Pulp will continue to strive towards limiting the impact of its operation on Howe Sound while maintaining security of employment for the people. Our customers demand quality and responsibility. WESTERN PULP LIMITED PARTNERSHIP ones," WHEN YOU mention the kitchen, some people think of good smells and flavors. Others think of stacks of dirty dishes. Not many people think of energy use. But significant energy savings can be realized in the kitchen — and it isn’t necessary to spend a fortune on fancy, high-tech gadgets. New or old, your kitchen appliances can be Power Smart if you keep them in good condition and use them efficiently. Keep your refrigerator cool. ‘“‘Make it easier for your refrigerator to do its job by posi- tioning it away from heat sources such as the range, dishwasher, heating vents or direct sunlight,” says Bob Favelle, Power Smart representative for North Shore/ Coastal. “This will save energy and may reduce the frequency of defrosting. The fridge should have adequate ventilation space behind and above it."’ Set the refrigerator temperature at Power Smart levels: 4°C (39°F) for the fridge, -18°C (O°F) for the freezer section. Defrost manual appliances when the ice thickness reaches half a centimetre, or slightly less than the width of a pencil. An uncrowded refrigerator works more efficiently than a crowded one — but the opposite is true of freezers! “Vacuum or lightly brush the condenser coils at the back of the fridge twice a year to remove dust and dirt, but be careful not to damage the floor,’’ advises Favelle. , “Check that the door fits tight- ly. If your fridge has heating coils in the walls to help avoid sweating, turn them off. The ap- pliance actually works against itself, cooling and heating at the same time, thus wasting energy.’’ Energy-efficient cooking. Self-cleaning ovens have extra insulation, and can save energy during use. If you use the self- cleaning feature no more than once a month, your energy con- sumption will be reduced. “Often, small appliances can do the job more efficiently than large says Favelle. “‘Using your electric kettle, automatic coffee maker or electric frying pan is more Power Smart than using the stove-top. And a microwave oven uses 10 to I5 times less electricity than a regular oven for the same task.’”” Preheat the oven only for deli- cate baked goods that require the precise temperature at the start of the cooking period, and then only . for 10 minutes. And while the oven is hot, make as much use of it as possible by cooking dishes that take the same temperature and approximately the same cook- ing time. Or organize your baking so that foods requiring the highest temperature bake first, then work your way down to those that need the lowest temperature. “Don’t peek!’’ says Favelle. ‘‘Opening the oven door significantly reduces the temperature inside. As well, make sure the oven door gasket is tight. if not, adjust or replace it.’’ For range-top cooking, choose pans to fit the element, and with tight-fitting lids. Power Smart dishwashing. ‘A dishwasher operated once a day uses about 45 litres of hot water, or about the same amount of water needed to wash and rinse dishes at the. sink three times a day. **Run the dishwasher only when it’s full and keep the water heater temperature at about 60°C (140°F),”* advises Favelle. **You can save even more on hot water costs by alternating small and large plates for better water circulation.” Energy-saving cycles are now available that make dishwashers more Power Smart. With an energy-saver cycle, the leftover heat in the machine is used to dry the dishes. If your machine has a- power dry cycle which turns on a heater to dry the dishes, turn the dishwasher off at the end of the rinse cycle and open the door so the dishes air-dry.
