Give gift of sight this Xmas season SEARCHING FOR the perfect Christmas gift is a frustrating ex- perience. Suddenly the season of “neace on Earth and goodwill to all’’ leaves you tired, frazzled and grumpy. But it doesn't have to be this way, according to Marilyn Heel, Manager of the Vancouver office of Operation Eyesight Universal. Heel says people looking for a gift to put some joy back into Christmas need look no further than the numerous aiternative gifts offered by Canadian chari- ties. People are becoming more in- terested in gifts with real value, says Heel. In the '80s people were very possession-oriented. Accord- ing to a recent Time/CNN poll, people are now less interested in Status symbol products and prefer items that give real satisfaction. Last Christmas, Canadians spent $4 biilion on presents, wrappings and decorations. In 1990, Canadians donated $4.7 billion to charity. Charities give people a chance to buy an excellent present and give to a worthy cause at the same time. In the book Under The Tree, Creative Alternatives To A Con- sumer Christmas, David and Elizabeth Morley show that ‘‘gifts that give twice’? are a good alter- native for people who are trying to save money and give a mean- ingful present. For a $25 donation, Operation Eyesight Universal lets you restore sight to one blind person in the developing world in someone else’s name. Operation Eyesight will send a Christmas card to the person you name with information about the person restored to sight through your donation. Donors will receive a tax receipt for the full value of their gift. “Think about it this way,’’ says Heel. ‘‘Would you rather buy another neck tie or a soap on a rope for someone this year or give the precious gift of sight in his or her name? For me it’s an easy choice. Not only will the person who receives the card be thrilled, GRAND OPENING Mownoay, DECEMBER 16TH at $:30 AM. of the renovated self-serve liquor store in DOLLAR SHOPPING CENTRE featuring increased product selection and specialty products JOIN US FOR COFFEE AND PRODUCT TASTING ON OPENING DAY The Manager and Staff look forward to serving you Province ot British.Columbla, -& someone in the developing world will receive the greatest gift of all — their sight."* Operation Eyesight Universal is a Canadian charity.
