CELEBRATION 100 A 4 Birthday weekend plans in place AFTER MONTHS of prepara- tion, the parties are ready to begin in celebration of the District's 100-year anniversary. All 5,000 free tickets for the Family Day on Grouse Mountain were snapped up almost as soon as they were announced, so orga- nizers are hoping that people whose plans have changed will return any unwanted tickets to a North Vancouver recreation centre for re-distribution to other local residents. Happening on Saturday, Aug. 10 — the muncipality’s official birthday -— the all-day Family Day will include a pancake breakfast (payment: one Centen- nial dollar coin) and a day full of music, performances and children’s activities right until 8 .m. p The next day, Sunday, Aug. 11, will be the date for another special Centennial Weekend event — the Vancouver Symphony Crchestra performance at Deep Cove, which begins at 7 p.m. Due to limited parking at both events, participants are encourag- ed to park and ride and take ad- vantage of the extra transit ser- vices provided for those days. Transit boosted THE VANCOUVER Regional Transit Commission has approved additional transit’ service during the District of North Vancouver's Centennial celebrations taking place Aug. 10 and II. “The Commission is pleased to provide additional transit service for people attending the district’s centennial event,’’ said North Vancouver District mayor and Commission chairman, Murray Dykeman. “The two major events, one at Grouse Mountain and the other at Cates Park, are expected to attract thousands of people,’’ said Mayor Dykeman. ‘‘Parking at the two sites is limited and additional transit service will make it easier for people to take part in our celebration.” The regular 232 Phibbs Ex- change/Grouse Mountain service will be supplemented on Saturday, Aug. 10, 1991, with extra shuttle buses. The shuttles will run from 15th and Lonsdale Avenue to Grouse Mountain. The 232 will travel up Lonsdale to Queens Road, down Queens Road to Edgemont Boulevard, then along Capilano Road to Grouse Mountain. People attend- ing the event can park and ride at the North Vancouver Recreation Centre, District of North Van- couver Municipal Hall (on Queens Road). Delbrook Community Centre, and Griffin Park. As well, the 236 Lonsdale Quay/Grouse Mountain bus ser- vice will be doubled. The addi- tional buses will provide 15- minute service along Marine Drive to Capilano Road, then up Capilano Road to Grouse Moun- tain, On Sunday, Aug. 11, a shuttle service from Capilano College to Cates Park will operate. The number 212 bus will travel from Capilano College down Lillooet Road, then along Fern Street to the Phibbs Exchange. After leaving Phibbs Exchange, the bus will travel along the Dollarton Highway to the event. People attending the Cates Park event can park and ride at Capilano College or at Phibbs Exchange. Youth to meet in Cates Park NORTH SHORE young people are organizing their own Centen- nial-supported event — the second annual Youth Festival being held Sunday, Aug. 18, in Cates Park. “Under the Volcano’? will run from noon to 5 p.m. and orga- nizers expect hundreds of young people to converge on the park to enjoy a large cross-section of North Shore bands, ranging from punk to folk anu reck and roll. Also highlighted will be art sta- tions, featuring tie-dying T-shirts, painting, and face-painting, and a literary event that will see poets on stage reading from their work. Organizers are encouraging par- ticipants to take the 212 Deep Cove bus, which leaves from Phibbs Exchage hourly at 47 minutes past the hour.
