Man pulls knife on salesclerk NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP are searching for a man who robbed a retail clerk at knifepoint Friday afternoon in the 1500- block of Lonsdale Avenue. At approximately 4:30 p.m. a man entered a fashion store, walked up to a female clerk, pulled a knife and said, “Give me all your money.”’ He then fled on foot. The suspect is described as being a Caucasian male, 25 to 30 years of age, with short biond hair and a moustache. He was wearing grey pants and a long, green, army-type coat. The investigation is ongoing, and, io press time, police had no suspect in custody. Player defends board policy | From page 1 it is that it is misleading. “With respect, Mr. Luccock, you haven’t got it right. There is far more teaching done by ad- ministrators than you state in this report. Most of our elementary vice-principals teach full time, so there are actually only 17 AO positions in the district.”” Player added that some of the administrative officers do work that is immensely advantageous to teachers. *‘For example, Mr. Jackson at West Van Secondary, who runs the foreign student program, br- ings $400,000 a year into the schoo! district by recruiting top- notch students. “That’s the equivalent of seven more teachers added to the district, plus a high-calibre Japa- nese teacher who will come to West Vancouver from Japan next year.”’ When Luccock read from the WVTA brief that the district should ‘restore student/teacher contact time for librarians, learn- ing-assistance teachers and counsellors by covering their preparation time with qualified teachers,’ and that ‘‘there is need to increase substitute time ... to allow release time’’ for teachers to do various non-classroom tasks, Player answered that teachers al- ready have a lot of such time and that taxpayers can’t pay for any more. Said Player: ‘‘Our teachers work very hard, and the issue of time is a real one. But a lot of time has already been given to teachers. There are now eight pro- fessional days per teacher per school year. “The response to the GST has shown us again that the pockets of the taxpayers are not endlessly deep. The average teacher’s salary in West Vancouver is now $53,094 including benefits, and at the rate things are going this could be over $60,000 next year. I repeat that this is the average. “The teachers just cannot real- istically have less instruction time per week,”’ Player added. Player concluded his remarks by reminding Luccock that ‘‘this province is in deep, deep trouble. There just isn’t the money coming in from forestry and the other in- dustries. “It is time for some creative solutions from teachers,’?
