8 - Friday, January 18, 1991 - North Shore News North Van student wins Premier’s Award NORTH VANCOUVER’S Shawna Pilgrim was one of 16 B.C. students to be honored recently with ihe Premier’s Excellence Awards by Premier Bill Vander Zalm and Advanced Education Minister Bruce Strachan. “Their energy and = creativity constitute a priceless resource they have applied well in serving their schouls, their fellow students and their communities,”’ said Vander Zalm. Strachan said that besides recognizing the excellence of indi- vidual students, the awards ‘‘also recognize the importance of the pursuit of excellence by all British Columbians in this era of the knowledge-based economy.”’ The Premier’s Excellence Awards were established in 1986. The top Grade 10 student in each of the province’s 15 college regions receives a medal of recog- nition and a $5,000 scholarship to attend a B.C. university, college or other post secondary institu- tion. Selected from 151 applications, the students were first nominated by their school principals on the basis of high academic standing and school and community ser- vice. Pilgrim is a graduate of Sutherland Secondary Schoo! and is currently studying in the faculty of science at Simon Fraser Uni- versity. She hopes to obtain an honors degree in biochemistry and microbiology, to enro! in a coop- erative education program and to pursue a career in medical research. According to a West Vancouver Police spokesman, two men entered the store at approximately 8:50 p.m. One of the men pro- duced a revolver and demanded money. The two men then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, One of the suspeets is described as being a Caucasian man, 5°50", about 30 years of age, with a stocky build, a moustache and dark receding bair. He was sear- ing a dark leather jacket. A second suspect is described as being a Caucasian male, about 45 years of age, 5°8"° with a stocky build. He was wearing a light- colored bomber-style jacket and a grey baseball cap. Any information regarding this incident may be forwarded to West Vancouver Police at 922- 414i.
