the country.

Continuing research indicates
that cars and trucks driven in
coastal regions are exposed to far
greater corrosive elements than
vehicles in snowy areas.

That is because the most com-
mon causes of automotive rust —
sah laden ocean mist, humidity
and mud — exist all year round in
warmer coastal areas, whereas
highway salt is a factor only five
months of the year in regions
where snow removal is a problem.

The risk of automotive rust
corrosion in many warm coastal
areas is compounded by other fac-

tors, among them airborne pollu-
tants from industrial and chemical
plants, aad liberal use of calcium
chloride to contro] dust on un-
paved roads.

An analysis showed that manu-
facturers’ warranties commonly
ignore 20 critical rust-prone areas
of cars and additional areas on
trucks and vans.

Among them are hood and
trunk inner panels, fender sup-
ports and reinforcements, door
frames, brake and fuel lines, vehi-
cle floor sheet metal, and structu-
ral and suspension components.

These components are all situ-
ated in interior areas of
automobiles.

And, since most automotive
rust starts from the interior and
works its way through, the pro-
spect for corrosion remains high
for new vehicle owners.
