These include various hybrids as well as species tifies. Of the latter, there are more than 100 known types, about two-thirds of which originate in Asia, one-quarter in North America and the remainder in Europe. However, most of those grown today are Asiatic, or Mid-century hybrids. These lilies have upward facing flowers (or chalice type). The origin of these lilies lies in the state of Oregon, at the nursery of Jan de Graaff in the middie of the 20th century, hence the name. Initially, the variety ‘Enchant- ment,’ an orange cultivar, was the great favorite. Since then, it has been overtaken in the popularity contest by ‘Connecticut King,’ a ocautiful yeliow variety. Today, when speaking of Asiatic lilies, all of the varieties with up- ward-fecing flowers are included. L. speciosum makes its appear- ance late in the summer season, ene of the last to bloom. It flowers in rich shades of red and white with large flowers, 15 cm (six in- ches) or more wids. The blooms are reflexed, in shades of pink through red with darker red spots.
