C2 - Sunday, December 4, 1983 - North Shore News With CPR course Learn to save a life DO YOU KNOW that more children die from accidents than from all major diseases? The four most common causes of child accidents (in order) are MVA (motor vehi- cle accidents), drowning, suf- focation and fire. An automobile crash at 50km. per hour can have the same effect on an unsecured child as dropping him from a third storey window. A key factor is that 75% of all home accidents are due to negligence and can be prevented. The North Shore Family YMCA CPR program offers training courses for the public and for health profes- sionals in basic life support. What is basic life support? It is an emergency first-aid procedure consisting of recognition of airway obstruction, absence of breathing and pulse, and the proper application of cardio- pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The heartsaver-baby course is the newest CPR cer- tification program recogniz- ed by the emergency health services commission to be developed, and focuses on the newborn to pre-school age group. The 34 hour course covers common causes of sudden death in babies and preven- tative measures to reduce the risk of accidents. Skills taught include obstructed air- way manoeuvres for a chok- XX ing baby, and infant and child CPR. Target groups in- clude those people caring for infants and_ toddlers in- cluding parents, daycare workers, and babysitters. Be more aware of child safety and learn to save a life. For more information on the heartsaver-baby course or other CPR programs, contact Lee Clark, R.N., CPR Co- ordinator, at The North Shore Family YMCA, 1735 Inglewood Avenue, West Vancouver, Phone 926-5541.
