PLANNING THE FIRST TRIP

Step one-apply for a passport

“What's the first step in made. These photos must be

planning an overseas visit?”
I'm often asked. Quite
simply apply for a
Canadian passport (or one
from your country of
nationality should you not be
a Canadian citizen).

Getting a passport is easy,
provided you have the
proper documents in your
possession. You'll need a
birth certificate or
citizenship paper, some
secondary proof of identity
such as a driver's licence or
social security card and an
application form, available
at post offices and travel
agencies.

In addition, you will
require two photos of a
certain shape and size, fully
explained in the application
form. These should be taken
by a photographer who
specializes in passport
pictures, both from a cost
standpoint and because
there won't be any mistakes

require the services of a
“guarantor” who has known
you personally for three
years. This person must be
drawn from a list of people
including police officers,
lawyers, ministers, doctors
and bank managers chosen
for their visible positions in
the community.

bucks.

If you are applying for a

passport, your old one must
accompany your. ap-
plication. You may ask to

have the expired one
returned to you for a
souvenir.

its establishment in the Ist
century B.C. to the Roman
Emperor Augustus.

As attested by exhibits in
the town’s Rhineland
Museum (they include
priceless marble sculptures
and mosaics), Trier soon
became a centre of craft-
smanship, trading and in-
tellectual activity. It was

known as the “Rome of the
North”, the point from which
western Europe was
governed by the Roman
emperors. Trier’s Porta
Nigra, the gateway to the
city, was built under Con-
stantine. A massive struc-
ture, Porta Nigra is worthy
of the admiration even of
those who have seen the
finest edifices of the Roman
Empire.

It takes a good deal longer
if you must mail all your
documents to Ottawa — and
even longer if you goof-up
on any part of the exercise.
As a point of interest, errors
are found in thirty per cent
of all applications ranging
from lack of signatures to
people swearing that they
have blue hair and blond
eyes.

These errors can be
corrected on the spot if you
visit the office but you can
imagine the delay should
everything have to be mailed
back for corrections.

Another~ advantage of
presenting your application
in person is that you don't
have to part with birth
certificates or other proofs
of identity. They are
scrutinized immediately and
retumed to you. Once you
have presented your ap-
plication, you don’t have to
wait around for three days
and return to pick up the
passport. It can be mailed to
you.

and travel agents.

Instead of simply asking a
customer if they possess a
valid passport, the agent
should request to have a
look at the thing. Many
people never look at their
passports from one year to
the next and it can come as a
shock to find that yours
expires next Tuesday.

Your passport is a

precious document and its
loss can lead to difficulties
abroad. To assist the
government offices in
replacing your passport,
record the number and place
and date of issue in a
separate place. I keep those
facts engraved on my mind
for convenience in filling out
foreign entry cards.
