GE sport © North Van places well in Marathon THEY WERE TIRED, exhausted and in some cases cramped, but 1,885 runners made it across the finish line in Vancouver’s 11th annual International Marathon. And in the front of the pack were two hardy souls the North Shore could be proud of: champion Stephen Pomeroy and third place Craig Knapton.. Pomeroy, 24, completed the gruelling 26-mile test in 2:16.56, followed by Vic- toria’s Peter Giannoudis at 2:23.49 and Knapton at 2:24.09. Although Pomeroy lives in the West End, he works for North Vancouver City as a planning technician. The win wasn't an easy one, even though Pomeroy easily out-distanced the rest of the field. “People kept telling me that I was looking good but I sure wasn't feeling good,” he said. “I was beginning to wonder if the race was ever poing to end.” Pomeroy had only run one marathon before’ the Vancouver International, while Knapton counted the weekend event as marathon number five in his three-year long distance career. Commenting on his surprise third place title, the Lynn Valley resident said he WEST VAN CHEETAHS (dark shirts) keep on thelr toes and on the ball in championship game against Surdel Rustlers.
