- Santa Claus is actually a
sexist fertility symbol, an
Ohio State professor says.

Steven Jones, an assistant
professor of comparative
studies at Ohio State

University, said he based his
theory on “all the images
associated with Santa.”
There is an aura of ex-
pectancy surrounding
Santa’s arrival, and he is
rotund in the same way and

place as a pregnant woman,
Jones said.

Jones said Santa gives
things and comes down the
chimney, the same
characteristics as the stork
of another myth.

Santa comes at the time of
the winter solstice, “a
critical time in the solar
cycle that has long been
recognized by all agrarian
peoples,” said Jones.

In short, he said: “Santa is
