Canada may restrict Japanese auto imports Following U.S. lead? OTTAWA (UPC) - The Canadian government would follow an American lead to protect the domestic auto in- dustry by imposing import restrictions on Japanese cars, industry Minister Herb Gray said last weekend. Public pressure to impose “I'm not saying it would have to be identical action, but we would have to take steps, in our own interests, depending on what the United States did with respect to these Japanese im- ports,” he added. “Certainly, if the United framework,” Gray said. In the past six months, Japanese imports increased “very rapidly’’ while American manufacturers, notably, Chrysler, laid off workers when sales declin- ed. “We have to bear in mind restrictions will increase unless there is a “substantial increase in the Canadian content” of Japanese im- ports, Gray said during an interview. Gray did not provide any specifics about how or when the import restrictions might be implemented. He also urged Japanese of- ficials to consider Canadian content, perhaps Canadian- built radiators, in the im- ports. The visit did not pro- duce any firm commitments but Japanese officials said would seriously con- sidtr the proposal, Gray said. x “We're talking about develping Canadian content in those imports: sq_ that while there’s a continued ac- cess to the Canadian markét; at the same time Canadian workers share in the access of the cars in question,” Gray said. “I will be sending to Japan a top level mission of senior officials from my depart- Montreal cops fuel efficient but the force says it runs the most economical crime- fighting fleet in North America.”We believe we are the most cost-efficient police car fleet in North America,” said Serge Emond. a Montreal Urban Community Police administrator. “We have a control system here that tells us to the penny how much is spent on each of our vehicles.” The MUC police fleet consists of 324 cruisers, 144 motorcycles, 53 am- bulances, 17 paddy wagons and 470 unmarked vehicles and nine extras on a total annual budget of $9.5 million.
