diving and playing around -
the boat I might well ask you. ~

Everyone is aware that
whales are true mammals as

are we. They are sorted into-
two groups: baleen whales ©

WHILE SKANA LOOKS tame, ft must be remembered that Killer Whales are big

killer whale is a toothed
whale; and that makes him
potentially dangerous.

While baleen whales filter
small. shrimp and other
inhabitants of the. plankton
from the surface of the
oceans, the killer whales
feed .upon their smaller
cousins, seals|) and even
baleen whales. They are fast-

‘moving predators and rather
opportunistic hunters.

I have observed them
hunting in packs: One
evening I heard their high
pitched whistling and rushed
on deck. I counted eight
whales around the boat,
crisscrossing and passing

‘beneath the boat as well.

Their movement was very

. quick and kind of nervous.

I have read about attacks
of these mammals on small
boats and felt uneasy. They
might damage the rudder.

the boat and crew never

just very curious. As soon as
I started the engine, they
