It all began quite innoc-
ently for 24-year-old Louise
LeBlanc, scheduled for a
routine periodontal operation
involving approximately -
forty minutes in the dentist’s-
chair.

But if the operation was
routine, Louise’s reaction to
it certainly was not. She
began. to hemorrhage quite

badly, and was. rushed |
 . immediately to the hospital, .

where she was given massive.
infusions of platelets, me
clotting . factor found)
blood,. in order to save her
life.

Although now fully recov-
ered from her ordeal, Louise
is still somewhat shaken by
what could have happened.
Instead, she was fortunate to
have been granted a warn-
ing.

‘Evidently miy blood is
platelet deficient. This can

mean, in simple terminology, |

that once I start bleeding, my
body lacks ‘the capacity to
stop it on its own.

To combat this, the plate- -
let count in the blood must be

raised. A transfusion of

platelets only, therefore, is:
