Several manufacturers
now known only as car
builders have dabbled in the
aircraft Geld over the years.
BMW s famous logo with its
quartered roundels was origi-
nally designed to represent 2
whirling airplane propeller.
Before getting involved in
automobiles, BMIW was an
engine builder for everything
from airships to early jet
fighters. The blue and white
hues on the logo are the
colours of the German state
of Bavaria where the compa-
ny has always been based.

BMW, incidentally, stands
for Bayerische Moteren
Werke, or Bavarian Motor
Works.

Sometimes, automakers
have their origins in fields
well outside the realm of
transportation.

The name Toyota is an
adaptation of the faril
name of its foursder Sakichi
Toyoda, who was born in
1867 at a time when Japan’s
industrial rebirth was just
getting under way. A brilliant
engineer in the textile field,

Tovoda became wealthy by
his invention of an automatic
loom. His son Kiichiro drew
on this resource to fund the
design and development of
an automobile. An engine
was developed in 1934, a
production truck appeared in
1935 and Toyota's first pas:
senger car, aprly named
Model AA, debuted in 1936.
Today, Tovota is one of the
world's Jargest automakers.

Many equipment suppliers
have histories that are no fess
fascinating than those of old-
established automakers.

Few tre manufacturers
are better known worldwide
than Goodyear and yes, there
really was a Mr. Goodyear.
Actually, Charles Goodyear
never had anything to do
with the tire company that
bears his name and certainly
never made any money out
of it. Goodyear was the dis-
coverer of hot vulcanization
in 1839 and as such is recog-
nized as founder of the com-
merciat rubber industry.
When Frank A. Seiberling
founded his tire and rubber
company in’ 1898 it was
decided to honour Goodyear
by using his name for it.
Goodyear had died broke
nearly forty years carlier.

Goodyear’s famed winged

foot logo was adopted in
1900. Its origins were in a
statue of Mercury, messenger
of the gods and a symbol of
speed, which was carved into
a banister at Frank
Sciberling’s home.
Sometimes, world famous
trademarks have curivus
beginnings.
