But a local group is trying to bring an
Olympic-style sports festival te the focat busi-
ness community.

The Vancouver Corporate Challenge
2006 is planned for Sept. 9-23. Organizers are

hoping for 8,000 participants in 15 sports.

The event is modelled after sitnilar festivals
in Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria, Las Vegas and
Salt Lake City. The Calgary meet annually
draws 17,000 participants from 172 companies
why compete in 20 sports.

Among the sports planned for the
Vancouver version are basketball, bowling,
darts, golt, sio-pitch, soccer, 10 km run, tug-o-
war and mountain bike racing.

NORTH Vancouver’s Brent Scrimshaw is the
new tournament director of the Air Canada
Championship.

Scrimshaw wili be in charge of all facets of
the annual PGA Tour stop at Northview Golf
and Country Club in Surrey Aug. 28 to Sept. 3.

His most recent job was vice-president of
marketing for Molson Rreweries in western
Canada. Prior to that, Scrimshaw was involved
with Molson’s national sponsorship and pro-
duction of sports and entertainment events,
including Championship Auto Racing Teams’
events in Vancouver and Toronto.

Scrimshaw, 44, is a native of London, Ont.
and graduate of the University of Western
Ontario.

JOHN Smiley and Brad Giles have joined
forces in a bid for a berth to the Pacific Coast
Curling Championships.

Smiley, a North Vancouverite who skips a
rink at the Richmond Winter Club, has enlisted
fellow North Vancouverite Giles to vie for one
of three berths to the Pacific Coast Curling
Championship.

Bill Rafter and lead Darren Jarvis. They’re com-

peting in the open zone playotls this weekend
with 13 other rinks from the Lower Mainland
and Vancouver Island for the right to return tu
the island for the Feb. 4-6 PCCA men’s cham-
pionship.

NORTH Vancouver telemark skier Diana
Mauriks was 13th in her world cup debut in
Geilo, Norway fase weekend.

Maunks placed 13th in the Jan. 22 classic
sprint (3:33.29) and 13th on Jan. 23 in the
giant slalom (1:51.29).

Finland's Pia Rata won both the classic
sprint and giant slalom. She raced the sprint in
2:57.55, beating American Cody Thompson
and Marta Aberg of Sweden. She beat Toril
Sande of Norway and Fia  Kongsholm of
Sweden in the slalom.

The cight-race circuit includes stops in
Sweden, France, Switzerland, Italy, the U.S.
and Kimberley, B.C.

Mauriks, who trains in Whisder, is a gradu-
ate of Mount Seymour's ski club and is the
reigning Canadian women’s champion of the
sport. She is one ef pwo women on the cight-
person national teani.

THE disabled skiers’ provincial champi-
onships are coming io Mount Seymour Feb.
12-13.

Racers will have two runs on a slalom course
on the Saturday morming and on the giant
slalom in the afternoon.

New racers will gain experience on the
Sunday in a B slalom race.

Competitors will be vying for berths in the
national disabled championships March 11-18
at B.C.’s Kimberley Alpine Resort.
