Canvases and carvings by r-old Squamish essMan are cur- rently on view at the Seymour Art Gallery, 4360 Gallant Ave. ir Deep Cove. The show runs ta Oct. 24 Vibrant pinks and oranges as well as moody blues and ns characterize the work of Baker, who, though a stu- dent at the Vancouver School of Art in the °60s, describes himself as largely self-taught. More influenced by travel than by teachings, Baker’s work combines the tradition of his culture with the experi- ence of his journeys to Europe and Southeast Asia. throughout the Pacific Rim that are most evident in the art on the. gallery’s walls. Onc brightly coloured canvas was painted in the mid-"80s after a sketch Baker produced on the beach in Thailand. On the beach are a row of seated figures, faces turned towards the viewer, their stylized features like West Coast native masks. The colours and shapes that define their individual features reflect the nationalities of those assembled — Tahitians, a Maori, an English girl and her German boyfriend, and the artist himself. A canoe in the waters offshore is strikingly similar in form to that of the West Coast native peoples. In fact, Baker has found many cultural similarities between aboriginal peoples of Pacific nations during his travels On a museum visit in Jakarta he saw ancient tools almost identical to these used by naaves in the Pacifte Northwest.
