An Apri 20 letter by North Vancouver City Coun. Darnell Mussarto defending his personal views agaist stnoking to promote ‘legistared clo- sure of businesses that require freedom of choice to survive demonstrates clearly that there is not enough competition in the political arena. The axiom thar the worst kind of lie is a par- tial truth applies to Mr Mussatto's reasoning. I'm sure that in his case this is non-intentonal because politicians are politicians. ‘There are partial-truths in his fetter. His state- ment that workers in smoking workplaces are so desperate for jobs implics they will work any- where under inhumane conditions and need his protection. Just because he said sco doesn’t make it true. He failed to tell more of the story, which is that he and his fellow politicians on the North Shore won the award of Least Desirable Place in Canada to start a business. Any lack of jobs and desperation on the part of potential workers lies squarely on his shoulders as 2 politician. Second partial-rruth is his claim of medical evidence and public acceptance of the medical consequences of associating with smokers. One can obtain medical evidence for or against any- thing. to suit any agenda. Left out of his story is a current study by the World Health Organization proving thar there are no such medical consequences. The public acceptance part is pure thought manipulation by sclf-iiterest: groups exploiang taxpayer grants and self-serving politicians hop- ing to ger votes. By the way, my tap water smells and tastes bad, road potholes arc damaging my car and sewers overflow whenever it rains. The medical evidence is solid and publicly accepted that these things are detrimental to mental and physica’ health. Perhaps Coun. Mussatto could promote legislation against these as well. Dundarave doesn’t need a pub Dear Editor: Re: Pubs in West Vancou- _ ver, You opine in the April 22 edition under Dining News that West Vancouver could use another good ncighborhood pub. I don’t know of the basis for your comment but this res- ident strongly disagrees. West Vancouver does not need a neighborhood pub in any of its residential areas and Dundarave is a residential and not a comunercial area. There may be peaple who agree with yon and who may even agree that a pub in Dundarave makes good sense. T believe thar the aver- whelming majority of the resi- dents in lower Dundarave who will be directly affected by the establishment of a pub in the area are dead set against any such establishment.
