Kaiie recently oversaw a complete renovation of the Canadian Pacific property in downtown Vancouver. Hoite:ier’s passion By Andrew McCredie Editor andrew@nsnews.cnm MICHAEL Kaile is feeling a little like a fish out of water. Four days prior to a lunch interview with a reporter in the airy dining room of the Waterfront Centre Hotel in downtown Vancouver, Kaile sold his sailboat. The West Vancouver tesi- dent considers himself an avid sailor, but lately, he says, the weather has put 2 damper on his passion. “Every time I was going down to the boat it was soak- ing wet,” the Waterfront Centre’s general manager and vice-president explains. “So I just decided to get rid of it.” Decisive action is a trade- mark of the West Vancouver man. A native of England, Kaile’s meteoric hotel career began as a teenager. The son of a Norwich financier. Kaile (pronounced “Cale”) first fell in love with the business dur- ing travels with his father. The characters: and settings from those days were to imprint themselves on the young man. At age 18 Kaile was work- ing tables at the Royal Bath Hotel. Then, following a four-vear stint. «ats the Westminster Hotel School in London, he became the youngest general manager for Trusthouse Forte at the Leicester Post House. He was Then his travels began. A year after marrying his wife Diane, he joined Holiday Inns International, and assisted with an opening in Kuwait. From there it was on to Bangkok to open a new prop- erty for another chain, then, in 1982, to Canada as the gencral_ manager of Holiday Inn Harborside. A job in Toronto was next, but Kaile, Diane and their son Rupert felt Vancouver’s tug pulling them back. The family returned in 1990 with Kaile’s appointment as director of operations for Coast Hotels. When CP Hotels came knock- ing, Kaile jumped at the chance to open the $100-mil- lion, 23-storey Waterfront Centre. Since that property opened in July 1991, Kaile has put his sophisticated stamp on it. And it has not gone unnoticed. ‘3 mgtime affair Kaile was named Chain Hotelier of the Year by the trade. publication Hotelier in 1996. In that same year the Waterfront Centre was rated among the tup 10 business hotels in the world by Report on Business magazine. He credits much of the hotel's success to the interna- tional flavor of his statf. “What the international experience gives you is that you become subject to other people's religion, lifestyles and opinions,” he says. “And you have to manage in thar cli- mate.” Asked if his son was going to follow in his footsteps, Kaile proudly noted thar 19- year-old Rupert is very near completing his helicopter training. “I have trouble running a lawn-mower, and here’s this guy flying a helicopter,” he says with a shake of his head. The seven years spent in West Van are the longest the Kaile family has spent in one place, and according to Kaile the North Shore is one of the most beautiful places in the world. (No need to remind him it may also be one of the weitest). _ FLEECES Selected stock : 25072 oy. wo 2698.0 we ayo OFF. & feg. price | L CTIVE ACHIEVEMENT CEN- TRE — 5065 Anola Dr., Bby.
