Thomson shoots on Nerth Shore By Shane Gray Contributing Writer CANADIAN actors are best known in the — entertainment indus- try, it seems, once they become American stars. It's nat very often we see a Canadian actor .who has chosen to remain in the country to pursue . their career. R.H. Thomson is an exception and for the most part has remained relatively busy, including his most recent work that brought him - to the North Shore. “Pm best known for stay- ing in Canada and pursuing my acting.” Thomson says. “If you wanted a film career like Schatner, Ackroyd, Michael J. Fox and other . household names you had to move to Hollywood. I chose not to. R.H spent time at different Alcoholics Composting in Your Backyard Almost one-third of normal household : waste is organic material that could be put to good use as compost. By composting, you not only help reduce the amount of garbage sent to landfill sites, but you also replenish the nutrients in your garden's soil. And what's goad for the soil is good for the environment! If you've heen thinking about starting your own compost pile but aren‘t quite sure where to begin, it's probably best to start; out small. You can either build your own compost container or purchase a commercially made one. Ifyou decide to build one, it's important to remember that the compost must not be entirely enclosed. Air must be able to circulate through the layers, and rainwater must be able to drain freely. For small-scale compost- ing, simply remove the bottom of a large garbage can, barrel, or wooden box. if possible, place the container ina sunny and airy part of your yard. Once the container Is in place, you can start adding kitchen and yard waste right away. For each layer of waste, add a thin layer of moist soll. Every two or three weeks, turn the pile over fo mix and acrate it. Remem- ber: in order for compost to function | properly, it must be kept moist. After one full year. your compost should be ready to - use as fertilizer and soil con- ditioner in your garden.
