Sunday evening in Dover,
England, Debbie Collins was
freezing, but was also full of
dignity,

Hours earlier the West

Vancouver doctor was pulled
from the English Channel

halfway into her attempt of

the 32-kilometre swim from
the English seaside town to
Calais on the French coast,
“She tried as hard as any-
one could, but it just wasn't
to be,” said Debbie’s hus-
band Shane yesterday from
Rnightsbridge, England,
Delayed three days due to
poor weather conditions,
Debbie's attempt Sunday
went well for the first four
hours, with the sky clear and
the seas relatively calm,
“After about four-and-a-.
half hours the cold. really
started to yet to her,” said
Shane, who in 1998 success-
fully crassed the Channel,
“She did same bieast strokes
to trv to focus, but after five,
five-and-a-half hours, it got
to the point she wasit't even
moving, She was almost ver-
tical in the water.”
