N. Shore choir comes

close in competition

THEY GAVE it their best
shot, but the North Shore
choir that took part in the
Dreamcoat Choral
Challenge finals Monday,
Feb, 8, won't be singing
with Donny Ostnond in the
spring.

“The judges sat there and
debated until 6 p.in. between this
choir (the Deep Cove Choral Ex-
plosion) and another choir,"
publicist Maureen Verkaar said of
finals that took place at the Or-
pheum Theatre. ‘It was very, very
close."”

Four winners —
Elementary,

Sperling
Coquitlam District

Children’s Choir, Pitt Meadows
Sevondary and the SDA Choral
Group — were chosen to sing with
Osmond in the Vancouver run of
Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph
aad the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, which opens May 25.

The Deep Cove Choral Explo-
sion, which included kids from
several North Shore schools, beat
several other Lower Mainland
choirs to qualify for the finals.

Although they will not be per-
forming this time around, Verkaar
said there is still a chance the
group could be used for a future
production. ‘If the show ever
comes back — like Phantom did
— the producers will immediately
seek out the semi-finalists.’

NV Youth Band holds lottery

THE LOCAL North Vancouver
Youth Band has been offering
opportunities for young people
since 1939, but now they need
your support.

In order to continue to serve the
community, the band is hoping to
raise much-needed funds through
a car lottery.

Tickets for the 1993 Mazda
MX-6 lottery will be sold at Park
Royal South this weekend, Feb.
13, and 14, and in Park Royal
North on March 6 and 7, by band

On March 20 and 21, and again
on March 27 and 28, they will
head to North Vancouver's Lynn
Valley Mall.

A $500 early bird draw will be
held Feb. 14 at 4:30 p.m. at Park
Royal South, which will be
followed by a short concert by the
band.

The grand prize draw is set for
April 3 at the International Plaza.
