The Ski Watch program allows the police to quickly identify the Mountaineer rescued from Lions A 26-YEAR-old mountaineer was injured Sunday afternoon after he fell more than 300 feet while returning from a hike up the North Shore Lions mountain peaks. By Michael Becker News Reporter According to North Shore Rescue Team (NSRT) spokesman Ross Peterson, Dan Jackson and climbing partner Kris Johnson were descending a snow slope mid-afternoon on Sunday when Jackson fell. The accident occurred in the headwater area of Harvey Creek, southwest of the western peak of the Lions, at an elevation of about 4,000 feet above sea level. Jackson ‘‘trocketted’? down a snow chute and struck a tree. Said Lions Bay Search and Rescue Team member Marcel An- drie, whose team of nine people conducted the search for Jackson, along with 10 NSRT rescuers, “It’s not a dangerous area. but (when) the snow crust is so hard, once you take a fall on this, it’s like skating on a sheet of ice.”’ The injured man’s climbing partner hurried down the moun- tain to Lions Bay and reported the mishap less than two hours later. The search and rescue effort was intiated at 4:50 p.m. A Labrador search and rescue helicopter, based in Comox, land- ed in Lions Bay at 9:30 p.m. to pick up Johnson for the trip back to the site where his friend fell. Jackson was located and lifted in- to the helicopter by 10:30 p.m. A Buffalo aircraft assisted the rescue operation by dropping parachute flares to light up the sky above the rescue site. The flares bathed the Lions in eerie yellow light and could be seen as far away as Nanaimo. Peterson described weather conditions at the time of the rescue as good. He said Jackson and Johnson, both Lower Mainland residents, were ‘‘experienced and well- equipped mountaineers.”’ Jackson was released from Vancouver General Hospital on Monday.
