Although there is a strong tradi- tion of natural healing all through medical history, it was in 1900 that medical doctors and practitioners of natural healing arts formed the Naturopathic Society of America. In the early 1920s, naturopathic medicine was included on the Mcd- ical Register in British Columbia and in 1936, it became a self- regulating profession under the Naturopathic Physicians Act. One of the stipulations of the Act is that naturopathic doctors (NDs) not administer any drugs on Schedule F of the Drug List of Canada or perform surgery. NDs do prescribe medicine that has a natural derivative, and Farnsworth says that nearly all of their therapies are without side ef- fect, unlike many drugs or therapies routinely prescribed by MDs. Farnsworth also notes that naturopathic medicine is more cost effective than traditional health care, as studies have shown that people suffering from the same complaint often have to make fewer trips to a naturopathic doc- tor as they would to a medical doctor. Further, naturopathic medicine tries to avert the need for costly surgery or hospitalization. Depending upon the dollar value of the visits, between 11 and 15 visits per year receive 100 per cent coverage under the Medical Ser- vices Plan of B.C. On July 1, 1987 a $5 per visit user fee came into ef- fect. No referral is required . Farnsworth, who is president of the Association of Naturopathic Physicians of B.C., says he is the only ND in West Vancouver, but that there are. five practising in North Vancouver. An association president, Farn- sworth says that he would like to see greater health care coverage and funding for preventative health care, and is encouraged by the $4 million budgeted by Mel Coulevier to study different factors in preventative care. Chiropractic supported A NEW support group has been formed in West Vancouver to pro- vide an extra voice in support of chiropractic care. It’s the Ambleside Chiropractic Support Group and its president is T.A. James, local chiropractic en- thusiast. The new group’s main focus will be public education on how to benefit from chiropractic health care, sO as to create wider public acceptance of this drugless branch of the provincial health care pro- gram.
