MAILBox School expansion slammed Dear Editor: As a Glenmore area resident | thank you for the opportunity of ouuining to your readers the major concerns of residents in this area regarding the proposed expansion of Collingwood Schooi. These concerns include the fol- lowing: 1. Change of Use. The old Glenmore School was, sel up and used as an elementary school only for many years with the majority of students close enough to walk back and forth from home. The new usc by a private school is by outsiders mostly requiring transportation to the area by car or bus, and a reduction of use of the school facilities by local area resi- dents. 2. Luss of Tranquillity A very small, quiet residential area with limited street access and relatively young students using the local school is suddenly shaken by traffic congestion, parking pro- blems, incrdased noise and litter pollution, faster cars, potential in- creased vandalism, alcohol and drug abuse, sometimes associated with older youngsters, and a reduction in the accessibility. and use of local recreational and park facilities by area residents. 3. Loss of School Use Local Glenmore residents cannot generally afford the private school fees, thus forcing them to trans- port their young children out of the Glenmore area (at least 2 miles) for their elementary school educa- tion. Their original understanding was that Collingwood’s use of this school was temporary and that it would revert to a public school once the number .of elementary school age children increased again in the area. 4. Unsatisfactory New Facttitles The residents know that Coll- ingwood School needs lots ol space, in fact, far more space than will ever be available in this area unless they take over park or resi- dential areca and feel that they should be looking elsewhere to sat- isfy their needs. They also wonder how teachers and parentr can accept the mixing of very young and senior students within the saine confined hallways, play area etc. when they seem to be segregated in all other schools in this area, They are trying to shochorn a very worthwhile facility into an area that does not fit. 5. Negative Effect on Property Values Younger families will wish to settle in an area with an elementary school within a reasonable distance and young and older families will not want to contend with the extra traffic, parking problems, noise etc., associated with secondary students so close by. Who then will want to purchase our homes? 6. Building Scale The doubling of the existing buildings on to a small sand area will not look right in a small resi- dential area, and concerns also ex- ist about future possible develop- ment stages that may add height additions to existing buildings, destroying views in the neighborhood. 7. Lack of Confideace Many residents in the Glenmore area feel they have generally been kept “in the dark"’ by the school board, municipal council and Coll- ingwood School in the past with respect to present and intended use of the school and don’t feel com- fortable at all about these groups giving consideration to local resi- dents’ concerns or needs in the future.
