NON-PROFIT AND voluntary
organizations face an increasingly
competitive market in the com-
munity and need to develop the
necessary skills to advertise their
services and raise their public
awareness.

To assist organizations in their
marketing know-how, the North
Shore Information and Volunteer
Centre (NSIVC) is sponsoring a
workshop titled Marketing for
Non-Profits.

The event will be held on
Thursday, March 24 from 6 to 9
p.m. at the Community Room, se-
cond floor of the Capilano Mall
(enter from parking lot, second
level from Hanes Avenue).

The workshop will be led by
Susan Varvarikos, planning con-
sultant with the United Way’s
North Shore Division, assisted by
Linda Hendrickson. Varvarikos
says,‘At the close of the
workshop, participants will have a
basic understanding of marketing,
know how to develop a marketing
plan for one’s organization and

understand the marketing mix of
price, product, promotion and
place, terms familiar to the
business world, but relatively new
to voluntary groups."’

The workshop is presented in
cooperation with the Vancouver
Volunteer Centre. Cost for the
workshop is $20 and pre-registra-
tion is advised.

Those not affiliated with an
organization but interested in
marketing and promotion can at-
tend the workshop and then visit
the NSIVC to find out where they
might be needed. NSIVC refers
people to a varicty of North Shore
organizations. A volunteer’s skills
and interests are evaluated in a
personal interview, and then a
referral is made to an agency
which has registered a request.

Volunteering provides a rewar-
ding experience for those who
desire to help, but can also be
training and job orientation in a
prospective employment field.
