ROUNDUP SPRAYING BC Rail urged to use safer plant controls Dear Editor: Tam writing in response to your Aug. 21 article titled Weed war fears are needless says BCR. The author's statement that, ‘‘Per- sonally, | hate and fear all weed killers. But unless you can shoot down the facts quoted by Barrie, his comments make reassuring sense.’’ In my opinion, Mr. Bar- tie’s comments do little to reassure me. { therefore accept the author’s offer to challenge BC Rail’s at- tempt to calm the fears of residents. Glyphosate is the active ingre- dient contained in the Roundup formulation. It comprises 41 per cent of the formulation with the Temaining 59 per cent consisting of unknown ‘inert’ ingredients, It is a broad. spectrum herbicide that kills annual and perennial broadleaf plants and grasses. Glyphosate is absorbed by the foliage and translocated throughout the plant. The way in which Glyphosate kills is not exactly known. Roundup was initially registered for Canadian use in 1974. Round- up was originally registered on partial data from Industrial Bio- Test Laboratories of Northbrook, Illinois. This laboratory was found to have falsified data on hundreds of chemicals. As a_ result, Agriculture Canada required Mon- santo to replace I8 of these studies. The Environmental Pro- tection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. has also registered Roundup. The EPA’s June 30, 1986 registration standard cites 88 studies that are required to be submitted to sup- port registration. There are numerous examples of pesticides that Save been registered for use in Canada and are now banned, recalled, withdrawn or cancelled. They include pesticides such as DDT. 2,4,5-T, Alachfor, Plictran and Chloradane. Tridutyltin, a pesticide used in bottom paints on boats, is not reg- istered for use in Canada but its use is permitted. In view of these facts, the registration of a chemical is hardly a guarantee of safety. The use of Roundup in West Vancouver or anywhere for that matter is not justified when alter- native means such as mechanical brush removal are available. Man- ual removal of brush is safer for the public and the environment in the Iong run. Hopefully, common sense will prevail in this issue and BC Rail will cancel its plans to ‘dribble’ 88 pounds of Roundup in West Vancouver.
