Radon threatens
Canadian homes

Dear Editor:

Canadian stay-at-homes face a
greater radiation risk than workers
in uranium mines. This finding,
contained in government studies,
also tells us that one Canadian
home in eight has indoor radon
levels four times the national
average.

Living at home, 100,000 Cana-
dians are subjected to the
equivalent of 200 chest x-rays a
year, And, applying strict U.S.
standards, several million homes
need upgrading. Many Canadians,
in other words, would be safer if
they spent their waking hours in
one of Ontario's nuclear-power
plants.

Radon, a colorless, odorless gas,
is the villain, It’s a break-down
daughter of uranium. And urani-
um, in varying quantities, is found
in rock formations everywhere.
Ground water, percolating through
these cocks, brings radon to the
surface in many places.

The worst areas in Canada,
from a home-radiation point of
view, are southern Saskatchewan,
around Winnipeg, west of Ottawa,

there that the greatest radiation
threat exists.

The situation, however, is spot-
ty. We need to know where the
bad areas are and what can be
done to protect people living there.
Our national! departments of
health and environment should
follow the lead of the En-
vironmental! Protection Agency in
the United States. They must pro-
