This finding, contained in government studies, also tells us that one Canadian home in eight has indoor radon levels four times the national average. Living at home, 100,000 Cana- dians are subjected to the equivalent of 200 chest x-rays a year, And, applying strict U.S. standards, several million homes need upgrading. Many Canadians, in other words, would be safer if they spent their waking hours in one of Ontario's nuclear-power plants. Radon, a colorless, odorless gas, is the villain, It’s a break-down daughter of uranium. And urani- um, in varying quantities, is found in rock formations everywhere. Ground water, percolating through these cocks, brings radon to the surface in many places. The worst areas in Canada, from a home-radiation point of view, are southern Saskatchewan, around Winnipeg, west of Ottawa, tect people in their homes, for it is there that the greatest radiation threat exists.
