Take the threatened teachers’ strike. At this writing, it was not clear whether the B.C. Teachers Federation would be able to bully or cajole the rank and file into do- ing things they ought not to do. But if the teachers like all sheep go astray, there is something that Domine Doug would like to tell them, They will be acting like fascists. You think that’s a bit strong? Stick around for a while. __H they hit the bricks, what they will be saying is that they are the government. Or that the govern- ment had better watch out because they will bend Victoria to their will, And never mind all that democracy nonsense that comes out of the legislature. It was in that spirit that Benito Mussolini’s boys marched on Rome in 1922. It was in that spirit, but with much less success, that Adolf Hitler’s lads staged their Putsch in Munich a year later. _ You may laugh at the idea that a wimpish walkout by teachers can be compared to such events. But it’s only a matter of degree. The blackshirts and. brownshirts of the Fascist and - Nazi movements were intent on coups de tat. The teachers, if they Skateboard ramps needed — WW. Van Ald. It would be different if they staged a protest in their spare time, or held public meetings at which they explained how the government should be ditched come the -next election. That would be the democratic way. But that’s not what the BCTF is up to. What it is up to is a one-day political strike that it doesn’t even have the guts to call a strike. It will be a ‘study session’’. What it boils down to is this: the BCTF lost the last election and is now intent on getting its way without an election. And I call that fascism. It may be a kind of baby fascism, but Benito would have approved of it. So, for that matter, would the democrats in the Kremlin. It wouldn’t surprise me if Tues- day’s strike made news in Pravda as an example of the workers’ Struggle for ‘‘freedom’’. What Bill Vander Zalm should do is to announce that any teacher who stays off the job wili be fired. | No ifs, ands or buts. If President Ronald Reagan could fire the air traffic controllers, then the Slam can fire teachers. After fair warn- ing, of course. After all, who was elected to lay down the rules around here? The backroom boys of the BCTF who push Elsie McMurphy forward to do their talking for them, or the members of the legislature? It is passing strange that the left wing always scems to think it has a right to adopt these fascist tac- tics, but would scream blue bloody murder if the other side tried it. Consider the furor there would have been if, during Dave Bar- rett's day as premier, the employers had ganged up against im. What if McMillan Bloedel and other corporations had stated they couldn’t live with Barrett’s labor legislation and that unless it were changed they would close down their plants? What if school boards had said they couldn’t live with Barrett’s school legislation (which gave the BCTF every damned thing it wanted and then some) and that unless it too were changed they would close down the schools? The knights of labor would have mounted their horses and charged, that’s what, while the trendies and liberals would have been heard from coast to coast and possibly in heaven, too. 1 would have been with them. For protest is one thing, but a March on Rome is another. | LYNN VALLEY CENTRE * Weekdays 9:00-5:30 © Saturdays 10:00-1:00 Taylor, who gave notice of mo-- “ tion Tuesday, noted that despite ‘new . rules. banning skateboards from various local streets, skateboards continue to be popular among local youths. _ “It is in the city’s interest to ‘provide for the safety and well- being of. ail,”’ Taylor said in his to provide service and recreational facilities for all of its citizens.’ Council is expected to debate Taylor’s motion Apri] 27.
