ii mailbox >< VL Jobs AND scenery Dear Editor: Recently a letter from one of your North Shore readers contained some: misinforma-- tion about Meares Island and the’ plan to harvest a part of the timber on the tiny island near Tofino, off the west coast of Vancouver Island. There are two serious, factual errors. The letter. described the old-growth: wilderness and other resources on the Island and then said: “Yet MacMillan Bloedel : has been given permission to clear-cut 90 per cent of the Island within the next twenty years!"” The fact is that MacMillan Bioedel has been given per- _fnission by the Provincial Government to harvest. (and “. geforest) 36 per cent of the sland . within the. next 36 : years. That is one per cent a --yénr for.36 years. atches of 30-40 hectares square will be logged and ad- -jacent areas will rot. be logg- ed-until the harvested area has © been reforested and Generous “sreens up’’. The: permission was granted after a three year public participation process in whict environmentalists, fishermeii, local residents, ‘Tepresentatives of the forest _industry,.the Provincial and Federal Governments, and other interested parties, had an opponiimit; %% present their views. The government-approved plan provides for conserva- tion — that is, wise use — of all the resources on the Island including fisheries, wildlife watershed, recreation, tourism and forests. The letter went on to claim that the Provincial Govern- ment granted MacMillan Bloedel “‘the right to destroy a unique part of our natural heritage, and an essential part of Indian culture.’” First, there. is nothing ‘“inique” about the timber. on Meares ‘Island. Indian _ lands have been logged, and the forest industry logged other parts of the island in 1957 and 1972..There has been & mine on the Island as well. Morenmver, there are many, many other islands and areas on the west coast of Vancouver Island with original-growth timber stands such as those on Meares Island. These have never been harvested and there are no plans to do so. For example, original-growth stands are dominant in Strathcona Park and Pacific Rim Park. There are also 13 ecological reserves on Van- couver Island. alone, and another 85 in other parts of the province. ‘Unlike Meares, these are truly virgin forests which have never been harvested.. ; Secondly, the harvesting plan does not include native Indian reserve lands on the Island. Their heritage will not be affected. The plan, however, does save 240 jobs. In short, we can have jobs and scenery. G.L. Ainscough, R.P.F.
