History of umbrellas

A FRENCH Gutana
engineer, Francois Fresnau,
created the first raincoat: He
waterproofed an old overcoat
by coating it with latex from
rubber trees.

Louis XIII is the first per-
son noted to have owned an
umbrella. Among a list of his
belongings, dated 1637, were
11 taffeta sunshades' of
vanous colors, and three oil-

ed cloth umbrellas embellish-
ed with gold and silver lace
beneath.

His umbrella stash was a
very atypical male collection.

Unul the late 18th century,
umbrellas were considered
feminine objects. They were
very expensive and often

rented out by churches and
coffeehouses.
