C9 - Sunday, May 1, 1983 - North Shore News SS fashion: SUMMER’S UNIFORM | Bareable, wearable beachwear By DIANE RAPSKE LET THE WINTER greys slip away and break out the sunshine with colors straight from the hot tropics. Beachwear colors for 1983 are brilliant and exciting. The cool air outside may still mean ‘‘sweater weather”, but it’s time to bring thoughts around to shopping for summer. What better way to wake up the beach but with a suit in vivid orange and melon, aqua and violet, black and red. “One suit in particular that we are selling has yellow, red, purple and turquoise all together in a lovely print,” said Lucy Tipple of Eaton's department store. Along with splashy prints suits come in incredible Stripes. Horizontal and vertical stripes together in the same suit are marvelous for either “de-emphasizing the hips and emphasizing the bust or vice versa if you wish,” said Tipple. The “Marilyn Monroe” influence evident in other fashions is also found in beachwear according to Brenda Eccles of Sweet Sixteen in the Park Royal shopping centre. One of Marilyn’s trademarks was the polka dot and they are everywhere — adding to this year’s fun and carefree look. Last year women wanted glitter and pizzazz but found that sequins and other such attachments didn't hold up with wear. “They sold well last year, but were easily ripped off and torn. We got more returns for refund than we cared to enjoy,” said Tipple. In the place of sequins came the belts. Flamboyant sashes in contrasting colors are tied at the side or front. Buckles, some very fancy with detailed work, add a metallic glitter to attract the eye. The belt enhances the figure as it cinches the waist according to Tipple. “The little girl look ts big at Sweet Sixteen,” said Eccles. “Remember those bathing suits you wore when you were very young? They had a single ruffle around the hip? Ruffles certainly are another favorite.” Continuing the trend of the past few years, the bikini though never dead is second choice to the elegant one piece suits. “The young people are buying the one- piece — they are more popular than ever,” said Tipple. At first glance one suit style, the “bandeau”, is quite deceiving. lt appears too modest with a back cut just below the shoulder blades and very wide shoulder straps. Take a second look and discover the french cut style for the legs. Evident in many one piece suits, the cut is dangerously high up the thigh. “The straps are removable which is ideal for sun- bathing. You don't have to worry about those shoulder marks when you wear low- neck dresses,” said Tipple. “The bandeau looks good on most everyone. They tone down areas that women may feel self. conscious about, said Tipple. Most sults are made from the familiar nylon/spandex materia!. However a new material, a poly-cotton Lycra, came on the scene last fall and is proving popular. “It’s very soft and stretchy — super com- fortable,” said Eccles. There is another material to look out for especially if you enjoy spending hours in the swirling hot tub. “The heat and chlorine rapidly breaks down materials with spandex in them. We now have suits from 100% polyester made specifically to withstand the _ harsh chlorine and heat,” said Tipple. “If you have a suit made from the regular material and are concerned about its care, wash in soapy suds and cool water after every swim. Don't use any detergent. It may add a bit of life to the suit,” said Tipple. 985-9101 1981 Lonsdale Ave. North Vancouver Its atime to remember. ; Wedding Special (in studio) $80 Candid Wedding (on location) from $110. 980.8551
