B12 - Sunday News, December 7, 1980 HE entertainment Ee Witty opener for Arts Club On Golden Pond a compassionate comedy The first production of the Seymour Street Arts Club Theatre season is Ernest Thompson's’ endearingly witty ON GOLDEN POND. It opened December 4 at 8:30 p.m. and plays Monday through Fridays at 8:30, Saturdays at 6:30 and 9:30 with special Thursday Matinees at 5:30 p.m. (2 for 1 at door) until January 10. On Golden Pond is the sassy and sentimental story of ‘Norman Thayer’, an infunating old man who has decided that life 1s over. He carps at his .sweet wife, bullies his daughter and taunts his future son-in-law. ‘Ethel’ is his sweet wife and while she prefers to think of herself as ‘middleaged’, 1s also sensing her mortality. Their summer at Golden Pond (their last from Normans point of view) looks like it will be a bust. Norman has even turned up his nose at his life-long passion, fishing. That is, until a cheeky California kid is foisted on them for the summer. On Golden Pond is a compassionate comedy. In a time of cynicism, i 1s completely concerned with that which endures the loving relationship built year by year between this en- chanting couple. Creating the charming roles of ‘Norman’ and ‘Ethel’ are two well-known per- formers: Owen Foran and Dons Chilcott. Foran has recently appeared with the Playhouse Theatre Company in A Servant Of Two Masters and The Red Devil Battery Sign and was last seen at the Arts Club Theatre in the musical Pippin. Ms. Chilcott returns to Vancouver from the premiere production of a Sharon Pollack play at Alberta Theatre Projects, and appeared for the Arts Club Theatre in The Im- promptu Of Outremont. Also in the cast of On Golden Pond are Susan Chapple as the daughter Chelsea, fresh from the B.C. tour of Private’ Lives; Norman Browning as_ her fiance Bill, recently returned to Vancouver from a season with the Stratford Festival in Ontano: Mark Acheson, seen in Carousel Theatre's critically acclaimed Mean To Be Free and playing ‘Billy Jr. Rick Carlow, making his NO BULL FBI hunts sperm DETROIT (UPI) - To the uninitiated in the mysteries of cattle breeding. 1t might seem odd that the FBI is investigating the theft of 3.13 ounces of bull semen.
