exico’s. strange ‘Tone of Silence’ Mexico has many | well trodden tourist paths. but ‘there are still some areas that few visitors yet. know about. — altel One such very interesting place is the Sierra del Silencio (Zone of Silence) in . the Mopimi ‘Desert which,. besides containing several mysterious phenomena, is an area for many UFO sightings. The Sierra del Silencio gets its name from the fact ' that in certain areas it is impossible to receive radio signals ‘with either high or . low frequency receivers. An engineer from Torreon, in the state of Coahuila, Harry de la Pena, has made a long study of the ‘gene and he reports that - besides the strange radio malfunctions, the area has frequent falls of meteorites_ and that there is an abun-~ dance of fossils, some of which are more than 60 million years old. These fossils, he says, can. be picked up from the surface .of the ground in sharply defined areas where crystallized minerals with strange shapes can also be found. The area also produces small desert plants with abnormal’ characteristics while all over the region animals are subject to strange behaviour and often lose their sense of direction. Dogs have fits of terror for no apparent reason and turtles that wander into the centre of the region turn over on their backs. Even if they are placed ‘right side up’, they will roll over again and remain in that position until they die. An unusual incident took place on July 11, 1970, when an American Athena rocket fell in the centre of this desert area. Prior to this, on March 27, 1970, the famous rocket expert Werner von. Braun visited Mexico to ask per- mission from the Mexican government to build an observation base at Ceballos, near to the Zone of Silence. According to Robert Charroux, the French in- vestigator of world-wide mysteries, Ceballos has been described as an ideal place for extraterrestrial visitors to land on our planet as it is an area which would provide them with almost total security. Werner von Braun’s. request to build his base was turned down by the government ... but official interest in the zorie per- sisted. The Athens - rocket, launched from Utah. and supposedly headed . for .. White Sands, New. Mexico, rather strangely went ‘off course’ and landed (surprise, surprise) in the Zone of Silence. The rocket was also supposedly carrying capsule of radioactive cobalt and naturally this had to be recovered. An .American military recovery team went over the © area for 24 days gathering— various samples and taking -both ordinary and infrared photographs. The team finally located their missing rocket and away they went taking with them, according to Charroux, 200,000 tons of earth and sample from adjacent areas. Rosendo Aguilera, who lives in. Ceballos, has often gone with his brother into the mystery zone collecting stones which are too strangely shaped to be natural; a screw head, a knotted steel cable, a high tension cable perforated from one end to the other, and common tools. So far, no one has come forward with an explanation for all this varied phenomena but sights of UFO’s are apparently almost a daily occurrence and they always disappear towards the Zone of Silence. . The thing that intrigues me about the Mopimi Desert is its location. If you go directly east along the 30 degree line you will pass right through the Bermuda Triangle. Continue east across the ocean (right over the area where Atlantis is thought to have been) and you will arrive at another desert, the formidable Sahara, and further along still you will pass’ by the mysterious Pyramids. . Keep going, through more desert regions, still on the 30 degree line, and you will come to Lhasa, the mysterious holy city of Tibet. Further on still you will come to the Japanese sea ... the Orient’s equivalent to the Bermuda: Triangle. Zoom over the vast and empty expanse of the pacific and you are back at the Zone of Silence.
