QUESTION: What in-
formation will I need to
apply for the Child Tax
Credit?

’ ANSWER: You will need to
file an income tax return.
The “six ‘basic steps” at the
front of:the Tax Guide
accompanying your tax

return, will probably provide —

all the information that you
will need to complete you
income tax return. .

-You must attach to your
completed return one copy
of the 1978 TFA! in-
formation slip (“Statement
of Family Allowances”) you
received from Health and
Welfare, Canada. Usually
the number of children for
whom ‘you can claim the
credit is indicated in box (F)
of this information slip.
There are instances where a
child is not indicated in box

_ (F) but is still considered
eligible for the Child Tax
Credit. For example in the
case of a child born in
December 1978, you will
need the award letter you
received from Health and
Welfare, Canada confirming
your eligibility to receive
Family Allowance for that
child.

You must also complete
and include with your in-
come tax return one copy of
Schedule 10 (“Child Tax
Credit for 1978”). This is a
special schedule which was
mailed to you with your
January family sallowance
cheque. The _ instruction
sheet accompanying
Schedule 10 will assist you in
claiming the Child Tax
Credit.

QUESTION: To claim the
Child Tax Credit, must I file
a tax return if I did not have
any income?

ANSWER: Yes, the only
way you Can claim the Child
Tax Credit is by filing an
income tax return. In your.
case you would simply
complete the “Identification
area” on Page 1 of the return
and enter a “O” for income
on line 60 of page 2. Then
you would calculate your
credit on Schedule 10 and
complete the bottom portion
of page 4 of the income tax
return.

Remember to attach
Schedulé 10 (“Child Tax
Credit for 1978”) and a copy
of the TFA1 information slip
(“Statement of Family
Allowances”) you received

from Health and Welfare, |

Canada indicating the
number of children you are
eligible to claim. The
number of children is usually
shown in box (F). of TFA!
slip. It is pessible that a child
isnot shown in box (F) but is
still considered eligible for
the credit, as in the case of a
child born in December
1978. In that case to claim
the Child Tax Credit you
would need the award letter
sent to you by Health and
Welfare, Canada confirming
your eligibility to receive
family allowance for tha
