In addition, a special vete of thanks should be given” te North Vancouver RCMP Superintendent Jamie Graham and Gerry Sandberg, chair- man of the Association of Elementary Administrators (North Vancouver School District), for their contribu- tions. Under the leadership of Superintendent Graham, the local RCMP detachment revisited its position regarding News The ng guard children crossing guards, On Mav 4. ander the lead ership of chairman Sandberg, who is the prneipal of Upper Fann School, the elementary school admunistrators reviewed the Calgary and Vancouver cressing guard models. These administrators resolved to find a way to deal with the satery of our children and have phived a major role in the development of the pilot crossing guard project. Last week, representatives of the School Board, North Vancouver City, North Vancouver District, the North Vancouver District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC), the British Columbia Awomobile Association (BC), ICBC and concerned parties met and discussed the issue of traffic safety as it related to youngsters of school age. Following the bricting, the group went to the intersection north shere news ___ MAIL Box issue explained of Eldon and Capilano Road and witnessed a crossing guard demonstration by menibers of the Calgary Police Service. You may be aware chat another publication quoted my call for ICBC to take sone of their “huge profits” and invest in the community in the form oof a full-time “School Safety (Police) Coordinator.” Photo Radar is where J would first look tor funding. There is much vet ta do as some collective agreement issues require resolution. However, on the eve of the first-ever meeting benween the school board and district ancl, fam hopeful that the safety of our kids will be dra- matically improved before the beginning oof school in September. It is important to note that without the full support of the elementary school administra- tors, this project would not have gotten off of the ground. Derrick Humphreys West Vancouver Dear Editor: Re: Lions Gate Hospital bus service. In May foourged West Vancouver Council to pre- serve and protect the Blue Bus service in view of the advent of the new Greater Vancouver Transit Authority. The West Vancouver dri- vers are the most careful and the most helpful and have the most difficult coutes. The subject of the dircet bus service to Lions Gate Hospital has been raised again. ‘This has been examined regu- larly since 1986 when I chaired B.C. Transit. The numbers, frequency and spread of hospital visitors per day or per hour is sparce. Even with a direct bus service the surveys showed that a majority of visitors would still use pri- vate cars. In 1986 B.C. Transit intro- duced the Handi-Dart system which, although requiring 3 telephone booking is inexpen- sive, reliable, and available.
