transition house for abused
women and their children,

For every woman referred to the
1O-bed shelter, two are turned
away due to flack of space. In
1989, 700 mothers and their
children were turned away,

Emily Murphy House currently
occupies rented facilites. Plans are
under way to build its own resi-
dence,

The Bank of B.C. division of
Hongkong Bank of Canada, Kelly,
Douglas & Company, Ltd. and
VanCity are sponsoring the event.

Mortifee
helps kids

WEST VANCOUVER’S Ann Mor.
tifee and country and western
singer Roger Miller will be guest
headliners for the 14th Annual
Timmy’s Christmas Telethon.

The 21-hour telethon will be
broadcast Jive from Queen
Elizabeth Theatre on CBC, Dec. 1
beginning at 8 p.m.

Mortifee has won critical and
popular acclaim with such varied
tours de force as Jacques Brel is
Alive and Well and Living in Paris
and her family memoir, Reflec-
tions on Crooked Waiking.

Mortifee will be accompanied
by Toronto-based pianist/
composer Hagocd Hardy.

All proceeds from the annual
fundraiser will go to maintain ser-
vices provided by the B.C. Lions
Society for disabled children and
their families.

West Vancouver artist Forrest
Johnson, one of two focal painters
who is showing her work at an
upcoming Ferry Building show at
Ambleside Landing.

Johnson doesn’t always see what
the camera does — witness, for
instance, the faces and figures she
saw on dead tree trunks during a
trek to South Moresby Island,
which inspired her to create
Nature’s Tatem paintings.

Johnson’s and Lorne Tophaim’s
work can be viewed from Dec.
4-9, Opening night reception is
from 6-8 p.en.
