THE deadly waters of Lynn Creck claimed another vic-
tim June 25. The incident attracted huge local media
coverage given the fact that the creek has claimed 17
accidental deaths since 1976, but it hasn‘t stopped the
jumping and diving into the ‘cold water. Tuesday, a 14-
year-old had to be rescued from her precarious hold on
a rock in the dangerous current. North Vancouver
District, is to be co ngratulated for its proactive park
ranger program which sees a permanent ranger and
three others (hired between mid-May and Labour Day)
patrol the park and creek banks in rotating shifts. They

assist in rescues but their prime objective is education of visitors to the danger posed
by the cold, fast currents. In this, says district natural parkland manager Kevin Bell,
they have been largely successful — eliminating drinking parties that often resulted in
dangerous behaviour. But Bell says making creck-diving an offence would create liabil-
ity issues for the district which would then have to enforce its bylaw by hiring more
rangers and literally chasing teens around the cliff tops — a recipe for disaster.
