PVE told you about my cookery classes for men of my own generation, how we come together courtesy of the North Shore Harvest kitchen every couple of weeks and mess around with meatloaf and other mouth-watering dishes so that men who now live alone can learn to make a decent meal for themszives. The day after our May !st class, when we explored some of the microwave’s talents, I invited myself to join the out- ing that the Neighbourhood House offers regularly to elderly ladics, on Thursdays. The plan this day was fer Dave, the straw boss, to take us out Deep Cove way, with the vintage years special intent to visit the Seymour Ait Gallery on Gallant Avenue. We did a tour of Cates Park on the way to the ultimate attraction, where Sylvia, the lady in charge, who had been alerted by Dave, offered us tea and cookies, We enjoyed those whilst we studied the beauty of the pictures on the walls and of the hand-made jewelry and painted silks in an adja- cent display. From there we drifted down to the batconied area at the bottom of the street, to Jook out and around at the sea and the town, Wher we left the Cove, Dave threw out the idea of a quick run up Mount Seymour before heading home and the ladies jumped ai the chance for a little more time on the foose. {t was fairly clear and we had some grand views from the top and on the ride down- hill. It was closing on 4 p.m. when they dropped me off. I've been thinking a lot about those ladies and those cook- ing-men, and of how we've reacted to old age in our sepa- rate ways. Men were almost invari- ably in charge, everywhere, when we were growing up. How they worked and what they worked at determined their status, as well us the status of their families. The women they married wanted what their men want- ed, bending their efforts faith- fully in that same direction to make a good home place. ‘That involved not just keeping the place clean and attractive but seeing to the children, their manners and their health and their associates. The man, the father, was the provider and the family arbiter and the definitive boss. Very interesting. Because when you look around right now, you see an awful lot of young, what we'd have called “marriage- able”, women who have not just discarded that “boss” idea — they've wiped their feet on it. And a lot of the ones that do marry seem to be pretty careless about the union they've entered, switching it for a better offer, even two or f sree of same. And so the chil- dren of the first union feel alien to the adults on whom they have to depend for liveli- hood and they have two options: to put up with it and scar their home life: or jettison everything and escape to the streets. There was a statistic on the news about Toronto's street- kids’ population, some appalling thousands. I rarely am abroad after dark any more, but when I am I don’t see that sort of thing, although I do see children } think should be home in bed. Are we just lucky over here, or is it because we have more sense of community, or is it simply because we lack the proper attractions? Ican’t think what role we have in this — they are our children and grand-children who have betrayed these youngsters, by discarding the idea that woman's place is in the home.
