I MHSAS MEH A YEE ANNIE TF a2” Ady Ss Pee ERE MS ah BE Cove marina owner disputes News v: Dear Editor: Tam writing as owner/operator of Seycove Marina in response to your Dec. 20 News Viewpoint “Not Neighborly.” 1 feel your editorial incorrectly reflects upon my inten- tions and actions. Firstly, I did not “plead poverty” when the upgrading of the docks for the Indian Ann boat commuters was raised. I simply pointed out that the rental income from boaters could neither pay nor justify the invest- ment needed to provide new docks and related facilities. Like many municipal govern- ments and private businesses I pro- posed to capitalize (sell) some of | my. land assets to pay: for needed . Capital improvements. Seven single-family residential lots were proposed as being consis- tent with the character of the “neighborhood” adjoining our prop- * erty. Secondly, your editorial’s sug- : gestion that our proposed security gate was “not neighborly” and rep- "resented “segregation” is also unin- formed. i : - We instalied our existing ‘“‘after- hours” security gate two years ago after’ numerous vandalism and - break-in problems at the marina, * and in response to concerns from “Enroll t now vin our 7 popular courses GEMSTONES ($380): Thu, Jan, 18 - Maen 21 RGES2 IDENTIFICATION: tuo, Jan. 23 = April 2% DIAMOND GRADING: ted, Feb. 7- Apsl 3 } Clagses: 615 — 8:00 pm at 549 Howe Strect } FGA. and AG. Following installation of the gate, which allows entry for legiti- mate marina users between 10 p.m. and 6 am., vandalism and distur- bances were reduced considerably. Full public access to the marina is available seven days a week dur- ing the daytime. In our situation we are basically talking about a security gate for a commercial business, with only a few residential lots also behind the gate (which is always open during daylight hours), so it does not “sig- nal” any kind of general change in the use of gated access as your edi- torial suggested. More broadly speaking, security iew access and parking gates are not new in the Lower Mainland or on the North Shore. You can find them at several townhouse developments in the Indian River area and single family homes in the Seymour area. t hope I have shown that [ have been a “good neighbor” by building new, extra-wide modern docks for commuters and by responding to concerns raised by my Panorama Drive “neighbors” regarding traffic and vandalism in our “neighbor- hood.” K.J.
