Kevin Gillies Contributing Writer But John Reynolds Sr, would have none of it. He was scheduled to referee an under-!2 boys’ soc- cer game pitting West Van against Burnaby's Cliff Avenue at Ambleside Park. For Reynolds, the assign- ment was no big deal, just another game in a life chock-full of soccer. But for members of the North Shore Youth Soccer Association (NSYSA), the feat was amazing. The game was played three days after Reynolds celebrated his 8Oth birthday. Reynolds arrived on the North Shore in 1966 from his native England where he had spent 20 years coach- ing and refereeing amateur “football.” He immediately started coaching locally and in 1968-69 was instrumental in establishing the coaches’ league, which still operates today. In 1979, his Lynn Valley Division 3 team won the Vancouver Shield as the Lower Mainland’s top team for their division. ; But it was in 1970 that Reynolds turned to his first love, officiating, by obtaining his referee badge. He then referced hundreds of North Shore youth soccer games before 1984, when he was the recipient of the NSYSA Referee Award honoring his “dedica- tion and outstanding service to youth soccer.” In 1989, when he retired after 10 ten years as Director of the NSYSA, Reynolds was again honored with a commemorative plaque at an NSYSA banquet in honor of his long and continuing service. While Reynolds downplayed the whole thing, Colin Campbell of the referee committee said Reynolds’ services has been invaluable to the North Shore. Past Director of the NSYSA Eric Keller concurs: “He has been very dependable. You could call him at any time and he would do make-up games, even mid- week games. He assessed and assisted referees and he has a good rapport with the kids.” Following Jast Saturday’s game, members of the NSYSA and its Referee Committee presented the always- humble Reynolds, soaked to the skin and bone, with a commemorative plaque to honor his 25 years of dedicated service to the North Shore soccer community.
