The North Vancouver District Fire Department reports that the possible cause of the fire was a torch used to heat tar, which apparently ignited combustible material at around 4:50 p.m. There were no injuries. @ A roof caught fire at Lynn Vatley After School Daycare in the 3300-block Mountain Flwy. on June 22. The 3:30 p.m. fire was caused by a torch used to mele tar. The North Vancouver District Fire Department reported that a roofer used the torch to soften the tar and the wood underneath prob- ably started to smolder. There were no children on the premises at the time, since they were being picked up by daycare staff from school. The fire caused no injuries. Smoke and roof damage are esti- mated at $4,700. The roof had been scheduled to be replaced prior to the fire. @ A car was deliberately set on fire Tuesday, June 20 at 3 a.m. near the tennis courts on Premier Street. A North Vancouver District Fire Department spokesman said the arson fire damaged only the vehicle. @ A tire was deliberately set ata gravel pit lucated in the 1600- block East Keith Rd. on June 18 at approximately 9 p.m. A trailer used for feeding workers and an abandoned car were both damaged in the inci- dent. The trophy is presented each year to the sail training ship which covers the greatest distance in any period of 124 hours. The ship has made courtesy calls at ports around the world. The Kaiwo Maru stopped in Victoria before visiting the North Shore. The ship was open to the public for guided tours on Sunday. The Kaiwo Maru is the only sail training ship among a fleet of train- ing ships operated by Japan's Institute for Sea Training. The ship was moored at Pier 94 to Thursday.
