A wall of expression Creative youth event “The Wall’ set for August 22 at N. Van’s Waterfront Park BERLIN HAD a wall. Now North Vancouver will have one. By Barbara Black ZAP! Writer But it won’t be a wall of op- pression, it’ be a wall of expres- sion. North Shore Community Action for Prevention of Substance Abuse (CAPSA) is organizing a major youth event in August call- ed ‘The Wall.’” On Saturday, August 22, Waterfront Park will be host to bands, workshops, demonstrations and more, all geared to North Shore yeuth. -. Organizer Sabrina -Deneumoustier says they’ve got LAST WEEK Talkback asked you whether women should be aliowed to go topless ia public. 1 think it is extremely naive for Gwen Jacobs and anybedy else to expect the public to react to a woman’s bare breasts the same way it would react to a man‘s bare chest. Those who believe this is true are oblivious to the fact tha’ women’s breasts are and always have been an erogenous zone and a stimulation to men who are more easily aroused by visual stimuli. This belief is not only naive but is potentially danger- ous. And so, I do not believe that. bare-chested women should be treated the same as bare-chested men because they won't be ireated the same. —Amanda, 17. The highlight will be the large “wall,’’ actually a Tyvek struc- ture, which is great to paint on, says Deneumoustier. **General Paints of North and West Vancouver have donated tons of water-based paints. Sta- tions will te set up with spray paint or cans and each person will have a four-foot by two-foot space to themselves.’” The idea is to encourage teens law. There shouldn't be any laws regulating how women or men should be acting, and we should get right out of the moralist expectations against women like they have some- thing to hide — some exciting fantasy for men, to hide. Women and men are equal and you can’t make flaws like that. You just have to learn it and respect it, —Irwin. I think there should be an equal Jaw for women, but... there might be some whacko who might rape the ladies because they’re going topless in public. But if they’re going in a really public place I think that would be okay, because I don’t think someone would rape them there. But if they're going topless in Lynn Valley or something it wouldn’t work cuz they could get killed...it’s just plain whacko. I think women should be allowed to if they want but they should also be prepared for any dangers. They could die the first day they take their shirt off. They should be warned about that. —male. I think it should be allowed for women to go bare-chested. Men have been doing it since the beginning of time. § think it’s fair that women should have equal rights too. But I PAINTED to express themselves in graffiti, poetry, graphics or any kind of visual statement. The wall will wind all the way through the park, and organizers hope to be able to display it in local malls after the event. “This is an opportunity to link young people on the North Shore together,”” says Deneumoustier. ‘“*We want to know how youth on the North Shore think.’' There will also be an ICBC mocktail display, games, tie-dye booth, arts and crafts workshops, rock-climbing demonstrations, a police and or firemen dunktank, a trivia contest and prizes. CAPSA is looking for volun- teers to help promote the event and to help on the day of the event. T know in New York people can already do that. There was a law made a while ago. They can go around with their shirts off. I think that’s dumb, no matter where it is, because sooner or later people are go- ing to want to go around with their pants eff end stuff like that. It’s just not right. If you want to do that join a nudist colony. —male. { think they should be allow- ed, but also lots of money would be lost on nudist beaci.es. —male. I think they should be allow- ed to go around without tops on — maybe their chests get hot, too. —male. I think women look better without their shists on and I think it’s a good step in the women’s muve for equal rights and we have to do this to move on. —male, Men have little breasts, women have big breasts, what's the diff?
